The present study aims to examine the viewpoint of Islamic philosophy regarding the incorporeal nature (tajarrud) of knowledge and its foundations, with a focus on revealed teachings. According to the principles of Islamic philosophy, the perceiver (mudrik) is connected to different aspects of reality in every form of perception, be it sensory, imaginative, or intellectual; The particular sensory object of perception (mudrak juz’ī ḥissī) corresponds to a sensory imaginal reality; the particular imaginative object of perception (mudrak juz’ī khayālī) corresponds to an ideal imaginal reality; and the universal intellectual object of perception (mudrak kullī ‘aqlī) corresponds to an intellectual reality. Relying on religious teachings, the present article analyzes how sensory and imaginative perceptions can be understood through abstraction (tajarrud) from matter, while intellectual perception necessitates further abstraction from form, as well.
The methodology of the present study involves the analysis of philosophical and religious texts, focusing on the examination of Qur'anic verses and narrations related to the incorporeality (tajarrud) of knowledge. The findings of this study indicate that the philosophical foundations of Islamic sages -such as the primacy of existence (aṣālat al-wujūd), gradation of existence (tashkīk al-wujūd), substantial motion (ḥarakat jawharīyah), and the correspondence of worlds (tatābuq al-‘awālim)- are inspired by religious teachings and contribute to affirming the incorporeal nature of various forms of knowledge.
The conclusion of this study demonstrates that the influence of religious teachings on philosophical thought regarding the incorporeality of knowledge fosters mutual validation between these two domains. This interplay contributes to a deeper and richer philosophical understanding of knowledge within the Islamic tradition.
